Chihuahuas are an integral part of our pop culture. Not only do celebrities carry them around in their bags, but there are also even some Chihuahuas that are famous themselves.
The fact that the Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world may not be a secret anymore. Also, that its name comes from the Mexican province “Chihuahua” is certainly known to many Chihuahua lovers.
However, how old do you think a Chihuahua can get, how many puppies does a litter have on average and how big is the smallest Chihuahua in the world?
Here are the answers to all these questions!
1Chihuahuas Came From an Ancient Breed
Today’s Chihuahua is very probably descended from the original Mexican dog breed, which was worshipped by the Aztecs and Toltecs – the Techichi. Images of these small dogs have already been found on vases and murals that are supposed to be over 2000 years old.
How the evolution from the name Techichi to Chihuahua really took place has not been sufficiently clarified until today. It is certain, however, that at the end of the 19th-century travelers from the USA discovered the small dogs in the Mexican province “Chihuahua” and took them to America.
2Chihuahuas Are Colorful
The Chihuahua has the largest color combinations of all dog breeds. Chihuahuas can occur in almost any color combination. The color variations are as varied as you can imagine. Also, the fur-variations are versatile. There are Chihuahuas with long, short or medium-long fur. The coat can be wiry or silky, single or double layered.
3Chihuahuas Enjoy a Long Lifespan
With an average life span of 14 to 18 years, the Chihuahua is one of the dog breeds with the longest life expectancy. The oldest Chihuahua was 20 years, 265 days old and was called “Megabyte”.
4They Are One of the First Registered Dog Breeds in the AKC
In 1884, the year the American Kennel Club (AKC) was founded, the breed first appeared under the term “Chihuahua Terrier” in a list of non-recognised breeds. Only 20 years later – in 1904 – the first Chihuahua was registered. This makes the small four-legged friends belong to the dog breeds led by the AKC for the longest time.
5They’re Little Geniuses
This sounds paradoxical at first: The smallest dog breed in the world has the largest dog brain. In fact, the Chihuahua has a larger brain in relation to his body weight than his fellow dogs of other breeds. So it is not surprising that the little guy is considered to be very intelligent, attentive and curious.
6The Difference Between Apple and Deer
According to the standards of international and national breeding associations, the head of a Chihuahua must always be round and apple-shaped. Especially in the USA, however, a deer-like head form spreads.
Fact is, however: The Chihuahua with the round head is recognized and the one with the longish head not. However, the Chihuahua with the longer muzzle should have less genetic problems or typical diseases of the breed.
7World Record: Biggest Litter of Puppies
All moms deserve awards, but this one can proudly say she’s a world record holder after having 11 puppies, a world record for the most puppies born to a Chihuahua. She gave birth to the pups on National Puppy Day, making the sweet announcement even sweeter. This comes after their 1.5-year-old mama was rescued from a hoarding situation. The 12-hour labor was a big surprise to her foster family.
8The Smallest Dog in the World
With an average weight of only 2 to 6 pounds and a size of 6 to 10 inches when fully grown, the Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world. Chihuahuas are smaller than Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, Toy Poodles, Papillons, Pug and Shih Tzus. The small size of the breed makes them an attractive choice for families living in apartments and small houses.
A Chihuahua called Miracle Milly is entitled to be by far the smallest living dog in the world. Milly, born December 1, 2011, is a 1 pound apple head Chihuahua owned by Vanesa Semler of Dorado, Puerto Rico. As Guinness World Records officials surveyed her on February 21, 2013, she was only 9.65 inches (3.8 inches) tall. This is really amazing!
Miracle Milly may carry the title of being the smallest dog in the world, but another Chihuahua is the smallest dog in the world. Heaven Sent Brandy was born on New Year’s Eve 2003 and is a longhaired woman who measures just 6 inches (15.2 cm) from the tip of her nose to the back of her tail. In 2005, Guinness World Records Brandy awarded the title of the world’s smallest dog.
9Chihuahuas Want to be Seen as Unique
Chihuahuas, often do not get on well with other pets. Of course, a goldfish doesn’t matter, but there can be competition between animals that need a lot of attention. Chihuahuas are not afraid to mess with dogs that are twice as big, which can lead to a lot of fighting. The opposite often confirms the rule. On the Internet, there are thousands of videos where Chihuahuas play wild with other pets like cats and dogs.
10Chihuahuas Have a Favorite Person
While the typical Golden Retriever sometimes can’t decide whether to give the postman, the dear neighbor or the owner a good first try, Chihuahuas have a very clear popularity scale. There is this one chosen favorite person at the top and then comes… nothing. Maybe the rest of the family at some point. But probably rather under the category “Never mind, as long as they don’t annoy me”. …
A Chihuahua is reserved and suspicious especially towards strangers. Close confidants may be allowed to ‘serve’ him. He loves his favorite person for life and will courageously protect him from any danger, no matter how serious.
11Chihuahuas are Heavy Jumpers
You won’t believe how much mess they can create in a kitchen! From a standing position, they can jump up more than 60cm. Remember that when you put shelves away.
12Chihuahuas are Elegant Clothes Wearers
Chihuahuas know how to wear an outfit.
From elaborate costumes to a stylish hat, there’s no doubt that these adorable puppies look cuter than ever in outfits.
Their small size and thin fur make them susceptible to cold & sunburn. Chihuahua clothing is also functional and keeps your Chihuahua warm in the winter months.
In summer, protective clothing can prevent the Chihuahua from getting sunburned.
Although they are susceptible to chills and tremors due to cold, many healthy adult Chihuahuas enjoy playing in the snow. This is okay as long as the Chihuahua stays outside for only about 20 minutes at temperatures above freezing and is kept on a leash or monitored in a safe, closed area.
Make sure your dog has a warm place to sleep!
13Chihuahuas Can be Carried in Purses
Chihuahuas, because they are so small, can also be carried in bags. But the question is whether it is healthy for them if they are carried too much. They are very agile and playful dogs, not fashion accessories.
14Chihuahuas Don’t Like Traveling & Removals
Take good care of your pet when you travel, as Chihuahuas find it difficult to cope with restricted areas for long periods of time. A transport box can be very helpful here.
Chihuahuas are happy if they have a permanent home. So if you move regularly, you should consider buying a different dog breed.
15Chihuahuas Can be Headstrong
The Chihuahua sometimes seems to want to prove that even if he is not a large dog breed, of course, he is strong. He also shows himself to be quite self-confident towards big dogs and barks at them in an exaggerated way. Moreover, Chihuahua’s little stubborn heads can be and have their own will. With a loving, consequent training the stubbornness can be steered into constructive paths.
16Remember the Taco Bell Chihuahua?
From 1993 to 2004, a Chihuahua called Gidget was the mascot of the Taco Bell restaurant chain. Originally occupied as the lead dog’s girlfriend, Gidget got the leading role instead.
This sweet actor then appeared in Legally Blonde 2.
17Marilyn Monroe Owned a Chihuahua
But the details about this Chihuahua are hard to find. There is no record of this dog, no information about what sex or name he had. Probably the dog was called Maf. That’s what Frank Sinatra is supposed to have said!
18Celebrities Love Chihuahuas
Even the rich and famous have a soft spot for these adorable dogs.
Reese Witherspoon, George Lopez, Rosie O’Donnell, Mickey Rourke, Madonna, Brian Littrell, Jennifer Lopez, Jamie Lee Curtis, Paula Abdul, Kimberly Stewart, Britney Spears, Sharon Osborne, Katherine McPhee, Anne Heche, Hillary Duff, Christina Rici, Alyssa Milano, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Paris Hilton.
They all love Chihuhuas!
