What is Spirulina?
Spirulina is a microscopic alga in the form of a spiral. It contains a remarkable concentration of nutrients found in hardly any known natural substance.
It is also a very high-protein substance and contains over 60% of all digestible plant proteins. It contains a very high concentration of beta-carotene, B vitamins 1,2 and 3, iron and trace elements. In addition, the rare essential fatty acid GLA (gamma linolenic acid) is found in the algae – this sounds very good.
Spirulina for the starvation?
Spirulina is not simply an alga – there are up to 35 species classified.
Interestingly enough, spirulina was described by the WHO as the “best food of the future” as early as 1974. The United Nations goes one step further and has founded an organization to fight global hunger with the help of the microalgae.
Spirulina is actually a type of bacteria called cyanobacterium and belongs to the group of blue-green algae. Research shows that more than three billion years ago cyanobacteria existed on the earth, which was still uninhabited at that time.
The reason for its “survival” was the ability to produce their own nourishment like a plant through photosynthesis. Chlorophyll enabled the plant to do this. This ensured the survival of the blue-green algae that existed on earth alone for millions of years.
Spirulina is a nutrient-rich powerhouse consisting of more than 50 percent proteins. It is also packed with chlorophyll. It is a dense source of vitamins, minerals, amino and omega-3 fatty acids, enzymes and trace elements.
Spirulina for dogs
Spirulina contains a number of unique phytonutrients such as phycocyanin, polysaccharides, and sulfolipids. These substances have been shown to strengthen the immune system and potentially reduce the risk of infection, cancer and autoimmune diseases.
